NIRMALA SADAN SPECIAL SCHOOL, MUVATTUPUZHA
Nirmala Sadan is an institute dedicated to the education and rehabilitation of persons with intellectual disabilities and is run by Franciscan Clarist sisters in the Diocese of Kothamangalam. Nirmala Sadan began its momentous journey in the year 1985. The center, which is located on the Muvattupuzha–Thodupuzha route, is three kilometers from Muvattupuzha.
The empowerment and integral development of the differently abled and socially marginalized, “The Special children of God,” by creating and providing educational infrastructure and other training programs.
Our mission is to mainstream our children by implementing an integrated development program in a pleasant and stimulating environment.
Assist a physically or intellectually disabled child to develop in normal living conditions and inclusive education.
SCHOOL FOR INTELLECTUALLY DISABLED, MUVATTUPUZHA
The Special School admits around 200 children in the age range of 4-18 years. In some cases, the age is extended up to 23. Children are grouped into pre-primary, primary, secondary, and pre-vocational levels. The curriculum activities include self-care, motor skills, communication, functional academics, socialization, domestic, and vocational skills. Besides this, training is provided in co-curricular activities such as sports and games, yoga, music, art and craft, dance, etc. Students attend equivalency examination classes for grades 4, 7, 10, and +2. Students are also provided with opportunities to participate in cultural competitions as well as National and International Special Olympics.
We conducted assessments to determine the current level of performance before providing training. All training is delivered by respective staff, including physiotherapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, physical educators, band masters, yoga teachers, music and dance teachers, vocational instructors, computer teachers, etc. All these professionals contribute to the better performance of the children.
Residential Services
Sixty students are staying in residential units. Students from distant places use this service. The main objective of this unit is to provide training in daily living skills.
The institute has grown rapidly with the loving presence and providence of God, the commitment and hard work of staff members, timely support from management and well-wishers, and cooperation from beneficiaries. They have been an unseen strength to transform disability into ability and problems into possibilities.
